How to Use Leaves to Make a Great Compost

Composting leaves has many benefits. First, it will help reduce the amount of yard waste that ends up in landfills.

Two, composting creates nutrient-rich soil that will provide better landscaping and other locations in your yard.

Third, it allows you to reduce household waste because you can dump food scraps in a compost pile. Remember not to add dairy products, pieces of bread, or meat to your compost pile.

Tear off leaves and mix with grass clippings or another high nitrogen source. Once you start mixing the leaves, start slowly and continue to stir the pile.

Be sure to keep the pile high as the sheets will provide insulation during the winter months. The leaves generally increase the acidity of the soil, so it is important to test it in the spring and adjust the pH level before adding soil to your garden.

Adding kitchen waste, like coffee grounds, will help increase the nitrogen levels in your compost, but be sure to keep a balance between this and your carbon elements, like the leaves. Try to maintain a 5 to 1 ratio of leaves to grass clippings/nitrogen source.
