How to Make Your Own Flower Food

When you've received or purchased a bouquet, you'll want to put it in water and make sure it lasts as long as possible.

But what happens when you don't get the ration pack with your flowers? Don't worry, you can make your flower food at home with just three super simple ingredients that you can already have in your kitchen and pantry.

Understanding the Ingredients in Flower Food

A surprising fact about flower food is that it consists of only three main ingredients: citric acid, sugar, and bleach.

The pack is designed to help flowers stay fresh longer, and each item has properties that preserve flowers beyond their normal shelf life with plain water.

Citric acid lowers the pH of the water, which can make it more livable for the development of fresh-cut flowers.

The sugar acts as the true "food" since the flowers produce and consume sugar in the process of photosynthesis, and once cut, they can no longer produce sugar.

When you add sugar to the water, the flowers think they are still eating, which keeps them excited. Lastly, bleach acts as a water disinfectant and helps eliminate potentially harmful bacteria that can affect the longevity of flowers.

If you're having trouble and need flower food ASAP, you can prepare it in a few simple steps.

Equipment tools

  • Measuring spoons
  • Jar

Materials

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon bleach
  • 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
  • 1 liter of warm water

Gather your supplies

Pre-measure the sugar, bleach, and lemon or lime juice.

Strictly follow the proper measures and do not mix more than one batch of flower food at a time. Increasing or changing the given measurements may result in a vapor that can irritate the eyes and sinuses.

Dispose of any unused "flower food" by pouring it down the drain.

Add water to your vase

Pour a liter of water into your vase and prepare to add it to your flower food mix.

Mix your ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, bleach, and lemon or lime juice until the sugar appears almost dissolved in the bleach juice mixture.

Stir the mixture gently and continuously until it looks almost transparent.

Add "food" to your vase

Add homemade flower food to your vase, stir, and immediately add fresh-cut flowers. Enjoy the whole week (and hopefully more!).

Flower food is much easier to make than you think, and you can even have all the ingredients at home. With our recipe, you will never see flowers fall prematurely again. Here are more days back home with a beautiful and fragrant bouquet!

You can extend the life of some flowers by removing them from the vase, making a new cut at the base of the stem, and replacing them in the vase with fresh water.
