Macramé Plant Hanger for Beginners

A macramé plant hanger is a fun and easy way to add a boho touch to any room.

Perfect for displaying your favorite plants and saving space, this beginner-friendly project will have you tying knots like a pro in no time—your home will thank you!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Macramé cord (3–5 mm thick, cotton or cotton-blend), 8 strands of about 2 meters each

  • Wooden or metal ring for the top

  • Small pot or planter

  • Scissors

Optional: beads or decorative elements to personalize your hanger.

Step 1: Prepare the Cords

Start by folding each cord in half and attaching it to the ring using a lark’s head knot.

This creates a neat and secure starting point.

Arrange the cords so they hang evenly and are easy to work with, making sure you have enough length to complete your hanger.

Step 2: Make the First Knots

Divide the cords into groups of four and tie a square knot about 10 cm below the ring for each group.

Keeping the knots at the same height ensures symmetry.

This first set of knots forms the foundation for your hanger and helps support the weight of your plant.

Step 3: Continue Knotting

Once the first knots are in place, leave a small space below them—around 5–7 cm—and tie another set of square knots in the same groups.

Repeat this process until you reach the desired length for your hanger.

Make sure to maintain even tension throughout so the structure stays balanced and tidy.

Step 4: Form the Base for Your Pot

When your hanger reaches the right length, gather all the cords together about 10–15 cm from the bottom and tie a tight knot to create the base that will hold your pot.

Double-check that the knot is secure, as it must support the plant safely.

Step 5: Adjust and Finish

Place your pot in the base and adjust the cords so it sits perfectly centered.

Trim any excess cord to give it a clean finish, and if you like, fray the ends for a decorative, bohemian look.

This final step ensures your hanger is both functional and visually appealing.

Tips for Beginners

Keeping knots evenly tensioned and spacing them consistently will make your hanger look neat and professional.

Measure your pot and hanging height beforehand to ensure a perfect fit. Adding beads or colored cords can give your hanger a unique and personal touch.

With this step-by-step approach, you can create a beautiful macramé plant hanger that brightens any room.

Once you’ve mastered the basic knots, you can experiment with patterns and designs to make more advanced hangers that truly stand out.
