Privacy Wall Ideas – How To Design A Secluded Backyard

You just moved into a new house and you love it, except for the lack of privacy in the backyard. Or maybe there is an unappealing view from the side of the fence. Maybe you want to create garden rooms and need ideas for room dividers.

Whatever the reason, creating a DIY privacy wall just takes a little imagination and maybe a stroll through thrift stores. A privacy wall can be a living wall, created from live plants, or a fixed wall, made from new or repurposed items, or a combination of both.

Living Walls

Planting green shrubs and hedges around the perimeter of the space are the traditional way to create a secluded backyard. Some good plant options are:

  • Arborvitae (Thuja)
  • Bamboo (various)
  • Burning bush (Euonymus alatus)
  • Cypress (Cupressus spp.)
  • False cypress (Chamaecyparis)
  • Holly (Ilex spp.)
  • Juniper (Juniperus)
  • Privet (Ligustrum spp.)
  • Viburnum (Viburnum spp.)
  • Yew (Taxus)

Stationary walls

Check the garage for unused items that can be reused as a privacy screen, or visit thrift stores for ideas. Examples include:

  • Old doors or antique shutters are painted or left as is, and connect with the door hinges to create an accordion-style privacy screen.
  • The wooden lattice panels are erected with wooden posts that are driven into the ground with concrete.
  • Curtains hang on both sides of an open porch.

There are many retail options available to help with vision and can fit anyone's budget.

  • Fake boxwood hedges in planting boxes can make a quick screen or divider.
  • Large pots full of tall, dense plants can hide an unappealing sight. Think evergreens or, in summer, choose canna lilies, rose Sharon, bamboo, or ornamental grass.
  • Vertical garden fabric pockets can be hung from a pergola on a deck to hide a neighbor's view. Fill the pockets with potting soil and plants.

Some are designed with an irrigation system. Creating privacy around the home can make the outdoor space more enjoyable and a secluded, relaxing garden for the family.
