How to Grow and Harvest Catnip in Containers

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is an herbaceous perennial that thrives in much of North America and is very easy to grow. It has a clumping growth habit with square stems and gray-green triangular to oval leaves with jagged edges that spread to about 3 inches long.

Flower spikes appear in late spring to early fall, bearing clusters of small white flowers spotted with light purple.

This plant grows quickly and can quickly spread across the landscape if left unchecked. It will reach its mature size in a single season and should be planted in the spring. Keep in mind that while many cats like catnip, the plant's oils are technically toxic to them.
